An awards event has taken place to recognise the achievements of children in care across Neath Port Talbot.
The event was arranged by Neath Port Talbot Council to showcase the personal achievements and raise the aspirations of looked after children. Over 25 young people aged between 12 and 14 were nominated for awards across three separate categories which included sport and leisure, education and school life, and personal achievement. The nominees were put forward for awards by their school teachers, social workers and foster carers.
A number of Welsh sports stars were in attendance to present awards to the winners including Welsh netball international Becky Oatley, former Swansea City striker Lee Trundle, Ospreys centre Kieron Fonotia, and British and Irish Lion Justin Tipuric. The event was closed with a dance performance from Lil Sugars of Britain’s Got Talent.
There were numerous stall holders at the event to give useful information to guests about supporting young people. Stall holders consisted of the Children’s Rights Unit, Barnardo’s, Voices from Care, South Wales Police, and the Mid and West Wales Fire Service. The event also featured a pop-up art gallery displaying the photography of one young person’s work.
This year’s awards were sponsored by Tata Steel who has also committed to supporting future events.
Nick Jarman, Director of Social Services, Health and Housing said:
“It is important that we recognise the achievements of young people who overcome the challenges of being in care. Prioritising the importance of educational activities is crucial to providing young people with the skills and knowledge they need to reach their full potential.”

Digwyddiad dathlu'n cael ei gynnal i nodi cyflawniadau plant sy'n derbyn gofal
Cynhaliwyd digwyddiad gwobrwyo i gydnabod cyflawniadau plant mewn gofal ar draws Castell-nedd Port Talbot.
Trefnwyd y digwyddiad gan Gyngor Castell-nedd Port Talbot i arddangos cyflawniadau personol plant sy'n derbyn gofal a chynyddu eu dyheadau. Enwebwyd dros 25 o bobl ifanc rhwng 12 a 14 oed ar gyfer gwobrau ar draws tri chategori gwahanol a oedd yn cynnwys chwaraeon a hamdden, addysg a bywyd ysgol a chyflawniad personol. Cynigiwyd yr enwebeion ar gyfer y gwobrau gan eu hathrawon ysgol, gweithwyr cymdeithasol a gofalwyr maeth.
Roedd nifer o enwogion y byd chwaraeon yng Nghymru yno i gyflwyno gwobrau i'r enillwyr gan gynnwys y chwaraewr pêl-rwyd rhyngwladol Becky Oatley, cyn ymosodwr Dinas Abertawe, Lee Trundle, canolwr y Gweilch, Kieron Fonotia, ac un o Lewod Prydain ac Iwerddon, Justin Tipuric. Gorffennwyd y digwyddiad gyda pherfformiad dawns gan Lil Sugars o Britain’s Got Talent.
Roedd nifer o ddeiliaid stondinau yn y digwyddiad i roi gwybodaeth ddefnyddiol i westeion am gefnogi pobl ifanc. Roedd deiliaid stondinau'n cynnwys yr Uned Hawliau Plant, Barnardo’s, Voices from Care, Heddlu De Cymru a Gwasanaeth Tân Canolbarth a Gorllewin Cymru. Roedd y digwyddiad hefyd yn cynnwys oriel gelf dros dro yn arddangos ffotograffiaeth un person ifanc.
Noddwyd gwobrau eleni gan Tata Steel sydd hefyd wedi ymrwymo i gefnogi digwyddiadau yn y dyfodol.
Meddai Nick Jarman, Cyfarwyddwr Gwasanaethau Cymdeithasol, Iechyd a Thai,
"Mae'n bwysig ein bod yn cydnabod cyflawniadau pobl ifanc sy'n goresgyn heriau bod mewn gofal. Mae blaenoriaethu pwysigrwydd gweithgareddau addysgol yn hanfodol i roi'r sgiliau a'r wybodaeth sydd eu hangen ar bobl ifanc er mwyn iddynt gyrraedd eu potensial llawn.
