An exhibition exploring how the Jewish community contributed to the development and growth of South Wales and how Jews adapted to life in Britain in the 20th Century is being displayed at Neath and Pontardawe libraries this month.
The exhibition includes excerpts from oral history interviews, documents and photographs collected by The Jewish History Association of South Wales.
The association has received funding for the project from the Heritage Lottery Fund and also from the Jewish Historical Society of England.
There will be a talk entitled Reminiscences of a South Wales Jew, along with more stories and recordings at Neath Library on Saturday June 22nd at 11am.
Entry to the exhibitions (part of the Libraries Learning Festival) is free of charge. The Pontardawe Library Exhibition Opens on Monday, June 24th while the Neath Library Exhibition is already open, having begun on June 17th.
Welsh Jews have been living here for hundreds of years having made their homes in Wales as they escaped persecution across Europe.
The Oral History Project by the Jewish History Association of South Wales brings to light the stories of many Jewish families which have been passed down from generation to generation.

Arddangosfa newydd yn goleuo rôl y gymuned Iddewig yn Ne Cymru
Mae arddangosfa’n cael ei chynnal yn llyfrgelloedd Castell-nedd a Phontardawe yn ystod y mis hwn i archwilio sut y cyfrannodd y cymunedau Iddewig i ddatblygiad a thwf De Cymru, a sut y bu i Iddewon addasu i fywyd ym Mhrydain yr 20fed ganrif.
Mae’r arddangosfa’n cynnwys dyfyniadau o gyfweliadau hanes llafar, dogfennau a lluniau a gasglwyd gan Gymdeithas Hanes Iddewig De Cymru.
Mae’r gymdeithas wedi derbyn nawdd ar gyfer y prosiect oddi wrth Gronfa Dreftadaeth y Loteri yn ogystal â Chymdeithas Hanes Iddewig Lloegr.
Mae mynediad i’r arddangosfa a’r sgyrsiau (sy’n rhan o Wyl Ddysgu’r Llyfrgelloedd) yn rhad ac am ddim. Mae Arddangosfa Llyfrgell Pontardawe’n agor ar ddydd Llun 24 Mehefin, ac Arddangosfa Llyfrgell Castell-nedd ar 17 Mehefin.
Bu Iddewon Cymreig yn byw yma ers cannoedd o flynyddoedd, ar ôl ymgartrefu yng Nghymru, wedi iddynt ddianc rhag cael eu herlid ledled Ewrop.
Mae’r Prosiect Hanes Llafar gan Gymdeithas Hanes Iddewig De Cymru’n amlygu straeon sawl teulu Iddewig, straeon a drosglwyddwyd o genhedlaeth i genhedlaeth. More stories
