Neath Port Talbot has become the first county borough in Wales to have a strategy to meet the requirements of the Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (Wales) Act 2015.
The Healthy Relationships for Stronger Communities Strategy was launched earlier today at the Princess Royal Theatre. Focussing on the areas of prevention, protection and the provision of support, the strategy sets out how the Council, ABMU Health Board and other key partners will continue to work together to tackle these issues.
Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children, Carl Sargeant AM, was one of the Keynote speakers at the event. Mr Sargeant said:
“We can only end Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence by working together. The Welsh Government, local government, the third sector and the general public all have role in ensuring this despicable crime is reported and the right services to support victims and survivors are in place. By publishing their strategy, Neath Port Talbot Council are making a commitment to play their part and I thank them for that.”
Councillor Alan Lockyer, Chair of the NPT Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Leadership Group added:
“These acts of violence and abuse can have a devastating and long lasting impact on victims and those close to them. The Council is committed to working with our partners to build on and improve the arrangements for the prevention, protection and support of victims and survivors of these crimes. The fact that we are the first area in Wales to launch such a strategy is testament to this.”
Andrew Davies, Chair of ABMU Health Board said:
“As Chair of ABMU Health Board I commend Neath Port Talbot Council for taking this crucially important step in combatting violence against and abuse of women. It is an approach our Health Board fully supports and is committed to implementing. As the recent high profile example of Harvey Weinstein has shown, dangerous and harmful attitudes and behaviour towards women are far too prevalent and need challenging robustly.”
Approximately 100 delegates attended the launch which took the format of a ‘learn and share’ event. The aim of the event was to help delegates understand the work going on within the county borough and the challenges ahead, whilst providing an opportunity for them to share their own experiences of their work in this field.
The strategy can be found on the Council’s website www.npt.gov.uk.

Castell-nedd Port Talbot yw'r fwrdeistref sirol gyntaf yng Nghymru i gyhoeddi strategaeth i fodloni gofynion Deddf Trais yn erbyn Menywod, Cam-drin Domestig a Thrais Rhywiol (Cymru) 2015.
Lansiwyd y Strategaeth Perthnasoedd Iach ar gyfer Cymunedau Cryfach yn gynharach heddiw yn Theatr y Dywysoges Frenhinol. Gan ganolbwyntio ar feysydd atal, amddiffyn a chefnogi, mae'r strategaeth yn nodi sut bydd y cyngor, Bwrdd Iechyd PABM a phartneriaid allweddol eraill yn parhau i weithio gyda'i gilydd i fynd i'r afael â'r materion hyn.
Carl Sargeant AS, Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Gymunedau a Phlant, oedd un o'r prif siaradwyr yn y digwyddiad. Meddai Mr Sargeant,
"Dim ond drwy weithio gyda'n gilydd y gallwn roi terfyn ar drais yn erbyn menywod, cam-drin domestig a thrais rhywiol. Mae gan Lywodraeth Cymru, llywodraeth leol, y trydydd sector a'r cyhoedd cyffredinol i gyd rôl wrth sicrhau yr adroddir am y troseddau ffiaidd hyn a bod y gwasanaethau cywir ar waith i gefnogi dioddefwyr a goroeswyr. Drwy gyhoeddi ei strategaeth, mae Castell-nedd Port Talbot yn gwneud ymrwymiad i chwarae ei rôl ac rwy'n ddiolchgar am hynny."
Ychwanegodd y Cynghorydd Alan Lockyer, Cadeirydd Grwp Trais yn erbyn Menywod, Cam-drin Domestig a Thrais Rhywiol CNPT,
“Gall y trais a'r cam-drin hwn gael effaith drychinebus a hirhoedlog ar ddioddefwyr a'r rheiny sy'n agos atynt. Mae'r cyngor yn ymrwymedig i weithio gyda'n partneriaid i ddatblygu'r trefniadau a'u gwella er mwyn atal, diogelu a chefnogi dioddefwyr a goroeswyr y troseddau hyn. Mae'r ffaith mai ni yw'r cyntaf yng Nghymru i lansio'r fath strategaeth yn brawf o hyn."
Meddai Andrew Davies, Cadeirydd Bwrdd Iechyd PABM,
"Fel Cadeirydd Bwrdd Iechyd PABM, rwy'n canmol Cyngor Castell-nedd Port Talbot am gymryd y cam hollbwysig hwn wrth atal cam-drin menywod a thrais yn eu herbyn. Dyma ymagwedd y mae ein Bwrdd Iechyd yn ei chefnogi'n llwyr ac rydym yn ymrwymedig i'w rhoi ar waith. Fel y mae achos proffil uchel Harvey Weinstein wedi dangos, mae agweddau ac ymddygiad peryglus a niweidiol at fenywod yn llawer rhy gyffredin ac mae angen eu herio'n gadarn."
Daeth oddeutu 100 o gynrychiolwyr i'r digwyddiad lansio ar ffurf 'dysgu a rhannu'. Nod y digwyddiad oedd helpu cynrychiolwyr i ddeall y gwaith a wneir yn y fwrdeistref sirol a'r heriau sydd i ddod, gan roi cyfle iddynt rannu eu profiadau o'u gwaith yn y maes hwn.
Mae copi o'r strategaeth ar gael ar wefan y cyngor yn www.npt.gov.uk.
