A £500,000 Welsh Government loan will be used to help Neath Port Talbot Council’s ambitious plan to buy the 55-acre site of the former Metal Box factory in Neath converting it to a new job creation site.
The £500,000 loan is part of the Welsh Government's commitment to creating prosperity in valleys communities.
Minister for Housing and Regeneration Rebecca Evans AM announced the loan this week as she joined the Valleys Taskforce, which is working to deliver real change for the South Wales Valleys. The aim of the taskforce is to create good-quality jobs, closer to people's homes, improve people's skills and bring prosperity for all.
She said: "I am delighted to join the Valleys Taskforce and am committed to working with communities across the Valleys to create jobs and opportunities together. The £20 million Town Centre Loan Fund is helping to revitalise communities across Wales and it will have a real impact in the Neath Port Talbot area.
"The Town Centre Loan Fund aims to help bring empty, underused sites and premises in town centres back into use. It supports activities that increase footfall in our town centres, tackle empty sites and help businesses to grow and prosper. Once loans are repaid, the money is used again to fund new loans."
The site Neath Port Talbot Council plans to buy in Milland Road, Neath, was occupied for more than 70 years by the former Metal Box container factory known locally as “The Box” but is now vacant after its most recent occupiers, the Crown packaging company, closed in 2016.
The aim is to establish offices, factory units and other businesses on the site which has excellent public transport links.
Neath will play a key role as a strategic hub in the delivery of the Welsh Government’s Our Valleys our Future plan, launched in 2017.
Speaking about the plans for the former Metal Box site, the Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Councillor Rob Jones said: “This money from the Welsh Government will be used to bring this site back into public ownership. It could possibly create 200 – 400 jobs.
“In total the site is 55 acres and there is just over 400,000sq ft of office and industrial space available.
“The hope is the project will attract inward investment and could also be a place for local firms to expand into creating jobs that would not have existed otherwise.”
He added: “We’re very grateful to the Welsh Government and Alun Davies (Cabinet Secretary for Local Government and Public Services) who has been leading the Our Valleys Our Future project and to our local AM Jeremy Miles for their assistance over this loan which is part of an overall plan to regenerate the valleys.”

Bydd benthyciad gwerth £500,000 gan Lywodraeth Cymru'n cael ei ddefnyddio i helpu â chynllun uchelgeisiol Cyngor Castell-nedd Port Talbot i brynu safle 55 erw hen ffatri'r Metal Box yng Nghastell-nedd a'i newid yn safle cyflogaeth newydd.
Mae'r benthyciad gwerth £500,000 yn rhan o ymrwymiad Llywodraeth Cymru i greu ffyniant yng nghymunedau'r cymoedd.
Cyhoeddwyd y newyddion am y benthyciad hwn yr wythnos hon gan Rebecca Evans AC, y Gweinidog Tai ac Adfywio, wrth iddi ymuno â Thasglu'r Cymoedd, sy'n gweithio i gyflawni newid go iawn yng nghymoedd De Cymru. Nod y tasglu yw creu swyddi o safon sy'n agosach at gartrefi pobl, yn gwella sgiliau pobl ac yn dod â ffyniant i bawb.
Meddai, "Rwy'n falch iawn o ymuno â Thasglu'r Cymoedd ac rwy'n ymroddedig i weithio gyda chymunedau ar draws y cymoedd i greu swyddi a chyfleoedd gyda'n gilydd. Mae Cronfa Benthyciadau Canol y Dref sy'n werth £20 miliwn yn helpu i adfywio cymunedau ar draws Cymru a bydd yn cael effaith go iawn ar ardal Gastell-nedd Port Talbot.
"Mae Cronfa Benthyciadau Canol y Dref yn ceisio helpu i roi bywyd newydd i safleoedd ac adeiladau yng nghanol y dref sy'n wag neu nad ydynt yn cael eu defnyddio digon. Mae'n cefnogi gweithgareddau sy'n cynyddu nifer yr ymwelwyr sy'n dod i ganol trefi, yn mynd i'r afael â safleoedd gwag ac yn helpu busnesau i dyfu a ffynnu. Wedi i fenthyciadau gael eu had-dalu, caiff yr arian ei ddefnyddio eto i ariannu benthyciadau newydd."
Bu'r safle y mae Cyngor Castell-nedd Port Talbot yn bwriadu ei brynu ar Heol Milland yn gartref i hen ffatri cynwysyddion Metal Box, a elwir yn lleol yn "The Box", am dros 70 o flynyddoedd ond mae bellach yn wag ers i'w ddeiliaid mwyaf diweddar, cwmni pecynnu'r Crown, gau yn 2016.
Y bwriad yw sefydlu swyddfeydd ac unedau ffatri a busnesau eraill ar y safle sydd â chysylltiadau cludiant cyhoeddus gwych.
Bydd Castell-nedd yn chware rôl allweddol fel canolfan strategol wrth gyflwyno cynllun 'Ein Cymoedd, Ein Dyfodol' Llywodraeth Cymru a lansiwyd yn 2017.
Wrth sôn am y cynlluniau ar gyfer safle hen ffatri Metal Box, meddai'r Cynghorydd Rob Jones, arweinydd Cyngor Castell-nedd Port Talbot, "Bydd yr arian hwn gan Lywodraeth Cymru'n cael ei ddefnyddio i roi'r safle dan berchnogaeth gyhoeddus unwaith eto. Gallai arwain at greu rhwng 200 a 400 o swyddi.
"Safle 55 erw yw hwn ac mae ychydig dros 400,000 o droedfeddi sgwâr o le swyddfa a diwydiannol ar gael.
"Y gobaith yw y bydd y prosiect yn denu buddsoddiad mewnol a gall hefyd fod yn lle i gwmnïau lleol ehangu a chreu swyddi na fyddai wedi bodoli del arall."
Ychwanegodd, "Rydym yn ddiolchgar iawn i Lywodraeth Cymru ac Alun Davies (Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Lywodraeth Leol a Gwasanaethau Cyhoeddus), sydd wedi bod yn arwain y prosiect Ein Cymoedd, Ein Dyfodol, ac i'n AC lleol, Jeremy Miles, am eu cymorth o ran y benthyciad hwn sy'n rhan o gynllun cyffredinol i adfywio'r cymoedd."
