Neath’s indoor market and the historic Neath September Fair have both signed up to a national charter giving customers confidence they will not be offered any illicit or counterfeit goods.
In signing up to the Real Deal Markets Charter, it means traders at the characterful indoor market and stall holders at the popular annual fair have pledged to continue working with Neath Port Talbot Council trading standards officers to ensure no fake or illicit goods are sold,
To sign up for the charter, market operators and traders must also sign a Code of Practice relating to the elimination of the sale of illicit or counterfeit goods.
The Real Deal campaign is an initiative of the National Markets Group for Intellectual Property IP Protection.
It is a cross-sector, partnership initiative, bringing together council trading standards services, market operators and traders, industry groups, and copyright and trademark owners – all united with by the common aim of tackling illicit trading at markets.
Since its launch in 2009, more than 500 markets across the UK have made a commitment to fake-free trading by signing the voluntary Real Deal Charter with their local trading standards teams.
Neath’s September Fair will be held for the 738th time this year and traces its origins back to 1280 when Marcher Lord Gilbert de Clare gave the go ahead for the event which is now one of the oldest fairs of its kind in Europe.
The trading fair, which for many years has been accompanied by fairground rides and amusements, contains products ranging from textiles, bulbs and plants, china, pottery and many more making the total of up to 140 stalls, all sited around the streets of Neath Town Centre. Many shops will also be open late to coincide with the fair.
Neath’s iconic indoor market, whose building dates back to 1837, sells a vast range of fresh produce and traditional goods and it also houses boutique stores and cafes serving the likes of lamb baguettes.
Cllr Des Davies, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Protection said: “We look forward to continuing to work closely with our market traders and operators to ensure customers get a wide range of products at good prices but which are also safe and legitimate.
“Our historic Neath Fair and the town’s indoor market are both popular attractions and this charter will help ensure their long established good reputations continue.”
