Port Talbot's Civic Square will be filled with military vehicles past and present next month as part of a new event to honour the brave men and women of the armed forces and their families. The display will be one of the highlights of the Mayor of Neath Port Talbot's Armed Forces Festival on Saturday 20th October, which is being supported by Swansea Sound and The Wave.
Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, Councillor Dennis Keogh said:
"This year marks the centenaries of the end of World War One, the Royal Air Force and St.John’s Ambulance in Wales. Also of the Representation of the People Act 1918 that enabled all men and some women over the age of 30 to vote for the first time, and paved the way for universal suffrage 10 years later.
“It seemed fitting therefore, to hold an event to pay tribute to the Armed Forces, both the fallen and veterans from the two World Wars and other global conflicts, and to honour those currently serving and their families for the ongoing contribution they make.”
As well as the display of military vehicles, the Festival has been chosen to support this year’s Poppy Appeal at the Royal British Legion’s Garden of Remembrance in Aberafan Shopping Centre. There will also be a flag raising ceremony to open the Festival. At 11.20am a plaque will be unveiled in the Memorial Park in Taibach to mark it as a ‘Field in Trust’ to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World war One.
The day will end with a concert at the Princess Royal Theatre to celebrate and commemorate the contribution of the armed forces and civilians in Neath Port Talbot. The full programme and booking details of which will be announced soon.
More information about the Festival can be found on the Mayor of Neath Port Talbot’s website www.npt./gov.uk/mayor.
