Neath singer Kirsten Orsborn has spoken of her pride in being asked to pay tribute to the armed forces and their families in the county borough that she calls home.
Kirsten will be topping the bill at the Mayor of Neath Port Talbot's Armed Forces Festival Concert at the Princess Royal Theatre on Saturday 20th October.
Kirsten, who has been officially adopted by The Royal Marines as their own ‘forces sweetheart’, said:
'As the Royal Marines Forces Sweetheart I am honoured to be attending and performing at such a wonderful event to celebrate the First World War. It will be an evening for us to show our appreciation to our heroes who put their lives at risk to keep us safe every day.'
The concert will be a special evening to honour the contribution of the armed forces and civilians in Neath Port Talbot. With a focus on the First World War, it will commemorate the fallen, celebrate the camaraderie of the time and be a way to say thank you to those who have served and continue to serve their country. All the profits from ticket sales will go to a fund to benefit armed forces charities.
Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, Councillor Dennis Keogh added:
"I am delighted that Kirsten has agreed to be part of this event. She is well known for her work in support of the armed forces and their families, and it couldn't be more fitting that she performs at the Festival.
"The concert will be the end of our festival to pay tribute to the armed forces, both the fallen and veterans from the two World Wars and other global conflicts, and to honour those currently serving and their families for the ongoing contribution they make.
“I hope people will come along and support the event to pay tribute to the brave men and women who give so much to preserve our liberty.”
Kirsten will perform a number of popular vintage songs. There will also be community singing of First World War classics such as ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’, ‘Keep the home fires burning’ and ‘Pack up your troubles’.
Also on the programme will be the 215 Squadron Air Training Corps Band and the City of Swansea Pipe Band and the Port Talbot Cymric Choir, all under the expert watch of well-known actor and director Brian Sullivan, who will act as master of ceremonies. The evening will end with the 'Last Post' and thousands of falling poppies, the official emblem of remembrance.
Tickets for the evening concert cost £10 each and can be purchased from the Princess Royal Theatre box office, tel: 01639 763214 or online at https://npttheatres.co.uk/princessroyal/events/the-mayors-armed-forces-festival-prt/. Tickets can also be purchased from Pontardawe Arts Centre and the Gwyn Hall in Neath.
The Mayor of Neath Port Talbot's Armed Forces Festival is being supported by Swansea Sound and 96.4FM The Wave. As well as the concert the Festival will include a display of military vehicles in Port Talbot’s Civic Square. The Festival has also been chosen to support the Poppy Appeal at the Royal British Legion’s Garden of Remembrance in Aberafan Shopping Centre. There will be a flag raising ceremony to open the festival. At 11.20am a plaque will be unveiled in the Memorial Park in Taibach to mark it as a ‘Field in Trust’ to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World war One. All daytime events will be free of charge.
