The Mayor of Neath Port Talbot has held an event to celebrate the centenary of women’s suffrage.
The lunchtime event coincided with European Local Democracy Week and focused on the theme of ‘women in politics’. Four key speakers who play an active role in politics throughout Wales shared their experiences with council staff. Each spoke about their journey into politics, the obstacles they have faced, people who have influenced them and what motivates them to do the job. Staff were also given the opportunity to ask questions to the speakers.
The key speakers at the event held in Port Talbot Civic Centre included:
• Councillor Debbie Wilcox, Leader of the Welsh Local Government Association and Newport City Council. Debbie became the first female Leader of Newport City Council in May 2016 and the first female leader of the Welsh Local Government Association in June 2017.
• Councillor Doreen Jones, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Equality in Neath Port Talbot and Labour Councillor for Aberdulais. Doreen has served as the Councillor for the Aberdulais Ward since May 2008.
• Councillor Linet Purcell, Plaid Cymru councillor for Pontardawe and former candidate for the Police and Crime Commissioner Elections for South Wales in 2016. Linet is the current Leader for Plaid Cymru in Neath Port Talbot.
• Councillor Jane Gebbie, Neath Port Talbot Branch Secretary for Unison and Labour Councillor for Pyle.
Councillor Dennis Keogh, Mayor of Neath Port Talbot Council, said:
“I am pleased to have hosted this event to celebrate the centenary of women’s suffrage and share the personal experiences of four influential women working in politics. It is important that we not only celebrate the achievements but also discuss the barriers women still face in political life.
“We want to ensure women use their voice and exert their influence as leaders and voters to make a real difference.”
Councillor Doreen Jones, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Equality, said:
“It is important for women to be seen in positions where they can be good role models to help motivate and inspire others. When women get to see and hear what other women are doing, it will help to give others the confidence, courage and resilience to further their personal development.”
