The countdown to the Mayor of Neath Port Talbot’s Armed Forces Festival has started and Baglan, Glynneath, Neath, Pontardawe and Port Talbot Libraries are busy making final preparations for events they will be holding during the Festival.
The Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, Councillor Scott Jones said: "Our Armed Forces Festival is now in its second year, and one of our aims for 2019 was to encourage venues and event organisers across the county borough to affiliate with us so that we could begin to grow the Festival by extending it to more places and running it over a longer period of time.
“I am delighted that a number of libraries, including Baglan, Glynneath, Neath, Pontardawe and Port Talbot have joined with us to organise their own interesting and imaginative events as part of the Festival.”
Baglan Library will be putting on a Poppy Craft Session on 7 November. The free session will run from 3.45pm to 5.00pm and is suitable for Children between the ages of 4 to 11 years. There is no need to book in advance.
Glynneath Library will be making a poppy wreath with local children during half term using recycled water bottles. There will be two sessions on Monday 28 October and Friday 1 November from 3pm to 4pm. Both sessions are free, with materials provided and there is no need to book in advance. The sessions are suitable for children aged 5 years and over, under 7s need to be accompanied by an adult.
Neath Library will be hosting two displays from Monday 28 October to Monday 11 November, one in the foyer of the Reference Library featuring the WWI letters between friends Ben Noot (of Victoria Gardens, Neath) and Fred Nicholas (of Lewis Road, Neath) during their time spent at war. The other, in the Reference library, features a selection of framed photographs of soldiers from the Neath and Briton Ferry area during the First World War. Neath Library will also be holding a Poppy Making Session in the junior library on Tuesday 29 October from 2.30pm to 3.30pm for children aged three and over. Places are limited and need to be booked in advance by calling 01639 644604. Both events in Neath Library are free of charge.
Pontardawe Library will be organising three events as part of the Festival. ‘Pontardawe at War’ will be the focus of a display at the library from Monday 28 October to Monday 11 November. The display, in conjunction with Pontardawe Royal British Legion, will feature information on personnel who served in the First World War, together with a ‘Tommy’ figure. On Wednesday 30 October at 2.30pm there will be a talk on ‘Remembrance’ from ex Royal Navy chief Mike Fuller, who served for 26 years. There will also be a craft group poppy making session for children aged three and over from 10.30am to 11.30am on Friday 1 November. All three events at Pontardawe Library will be free of charge. Port Talbot Library will be ‘Celebrating Port Talbot’s Heroes’ at an exhibition to be launched on Saturday 2 November. The library will be collecting photographs for this until Monday 28 October. Anyone who has photographs of themselves or family members, past or present, that they would like to share can email them to porttalbot.library@npt.gov.uk or call into the library so that pictures can be copied. On Friday 1 November there will be a free ‘Walk in Art session’ with Claire from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. The free session will be suitable for children aged 5 and over. The Library will be holding a 1940’s Tea Party in aid of Help for Heroes on Saturday 2 November at 10:30am. Go along to meet the library’s local history group and celebrate and commemorate all the brave men and women who have served their country. Library staff will be getting into the spirit and dressing in 1940’s outfits, and visitors are welcome to do the same. All events are free, but there will be a 20p donation requested for tea or coffee at the tea party.
The Mayor of Neath Port Talbot’s Armed Forces Festival runs from Monday 28 October to Monday 11 November and is supported by The Wave, Swansea Sound and Port Talbot’s Aberafan Shopping Centre.

“Rwyf wrth fy modd bod nifer o lyfrgelloedd, gan gynnwys Baglan, Glyn-nedd, Castell-nedd, Pontardawe a Phort Talbot wedi ymuno â ni i drefnu eu digwyddiadau diddorol, llawn dychymyg eu hunain fel rhan o’r Wyl.”
Bydd Llyfrgell Baglan yn trefnu Sesiwn Crefftau Pabi ar 7 Tachwedd. Cynhelir y sesiwn ddi-dâl rhwng 3.45pm a 5.00pm a bydd yn addas ar gyfer plant rhwng 4 ac 11 oed. Does dim angen cadw lle ymlaen llaw.
Bydd Llyfrgell Glyn-nedd yn creu torch pabïau gyda phlant lleol yn ystod hanner tymor, gan ddefnyddio poteli dwr wedi’u hailgylchu. Cynhelir dwy sesiwn, ddydd Llun 28 Hydref a dydd Gwener 1 Tachwedd rhwng 3pm a 4pm. Bydd y ddwy sesiwn ar gael yn ddi-dâl, bydd y deunyddiau’n cael eu darparu, a does dim angen cadw lle ymlaen llaw. Bydd yr arddangosfa arall yn y llyfrgell Gyfeiriadol yn cynnwys detholiad o ffotograffau wedi’u fframio o filwyr o ardal Castell-nedd a Llansawel yn ystod y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf.
